Ever since I started Taproot Radio, I've dreamt of being able to host a house concert at my place in Chapel Hill. Today I'm excited to finally be able to announce that the first Taproot House Concert will be a benefit show for WCOM on Sunday April 25th at 7:00, featuring Americana legends, Hooverville!
Listeners of WUNC's Back Porch Music know that Hooverville is a staple of that show, and for good reason. Hooverville's take on 30's-era depression music based on brother-act harmonies is just the launching point for a deep, wandering journey through the landscape of American music. When Hooverville takes the stage you never know if your going to be hearing murder ballads, strange waltzes, swampy blues, or country rockers about sedans. No matter where they go musically, they never wander far from that easy-going, relaxed back porch feel. If your into The Band, The Flatanders, or Uncle Tupelo, your sure to find your next favorite band in Hooverville.
This first Taproot House Concert is a benefit show for WCOM, the community radio station for Chapel Hill and Carrboro and the broadcast home of Taproot Radio. I am proud to live in a community that values the do-it-yourself spirit of media production, where friends and neighbors produce entertainment for each other, where citizens have the nerve to speak up in public media and share their views of the world, where the First Amendment is not just an idea, but a way of life. Nothing embodies this spirit better than WCOM. Leo Reynolds will be on hand to tell you more about our grand experiment in community radio and to answer your questions about the station.
Typically in house concerts, all door proceeds go to the artist. But Hooverville has graciously agreed to split the door proceeds with WCOM. So you'll not only be supporting some fantastic independent artists, you'll be supporting your community radio station. Like all house concerts, space is very limited! To reserve your seats at the Hooverville show on April 25th, visit http://house.taprootradio.com. Tickets are $10 per person and must be paid in advance at the web site.
